1927-1950

Not all of the links have been set up yet, and I still need to type in much of the information from the data sheets. Eventually, I'll have notes for every model listed that will help identify it, and links to any web sites or images that I find. If you have a web site or photos of any of these models, please email me with either a URL or attached image file.  If you send a photo, please state a preference for photo credits, eg. your real name, or email address, or web site URL.

The NostalgiaAir schematics are fairly large B&W gif images, scanned at about 300 dpi - not fine enough to read all of the values. For higher quality copies, you may order data sheets for individual models to be snail-mailed from JustRadios. Currently (Fall, 2002) they are priced at Cdn$7.00/US$5.00 for each schematic. You may also see if eBay seller "oidar" currently has a CD-ROM for auction, titled "Canadian Radios on CD, RCC & MYE, 1927-52" (which only runs on MS Windows or a Windows emulator). This list is based on data found on an earlier version of that CD-ROM.

Series Titles - New models were typically introduced late in the year before their official model year. For instance, a 1947 model would have been on the market by late 1946, in time for holiday season shopping. In most cases, the years in the series' titles are a combination of the model year and the actual year they were introduced, which explains the apparent overlaps.

Between 1943 and 1945, production of consumer radios by Northern Electric was suspended, giving priority to Defense production during World War II.

There are also Northern Electric models that were produced prior to 1927, which do not appear in this index. (Eg models R4, R12.)

Some model names were used over several years, for sets which bore very little resemblance to each other

1946-47 Brings us the first of the popular Art Deco "rainbow" cabinets for the "Baby Champ" series, with the waterfall speaker grille and just a hint of a stepped pyramid at the sides and front.

When compared to a model 5000, the schematic of the 5000-1 shows one less trimmer capacitor in the oscillator section, and another trimmer cap in a different place in the oscillator section. The 5000-1 also has an additional mica cap in the loop antenna circuit.

5004	93	Radio-Phono set, with chassis, dial, and (3) knobs similar to a model 5000. 60 Hz AC only on models 5004A, 5004AL; 25 Hz AC only on models 5004B and 5004BL. Those restrictions are due to the turntable motor. Without the motor, it could be used like a standard AC/DC radio. My 5004, however, says "Cycles: Universal 25 - 60". Internal loop antenna, with terminal for external antenna. Mine happened to come with an external hank antenna. Cabinet: wood covered with woodgrain-style "photo-finish". "Deluxe" model is not mentioned in the index of data sheets, nor in the data sheets themselves. 5114	94	I don't know what this one looks like, but the chassis photo looks a lot like that of a Baby Champ. See notes for model 5108. There is nothing on data sheet 94 to indicate any difference between the 5114 and the 5108, except that it says "schematic diagram model 5108", which suggests that the difference is in the schematic, possibly something like not having an AC receptacle.

7001	95	I don't know what this one looks like. AC model. Features 12 round pushbuttons, in two rows of 6. The top row of buttons are for selection of:  1 - Phonograph; 2 - Manual Tuning; 3 - Pushbutton Tuning; 4 - B.C. Band; 5 - SW 1 (11.5 to 23 MHz); 6 - SW 2 (5.8 to 12 MHz) The lower six buttons are for pre-set stations. A note on data sheet 95 says: "Before shipping, Preset Push Button Circuits are tuned to 600 kc-s, 600 kc-s, 900 kc-s, 1200 kc-s, 1600 kc-s, in that order. To retune any one of them, (a) adjust iron core in Preset osc. coil until signal at desired frequency is heard; (b) adjust preset trimmer for max. output." 7 tubes: RF Amp; 1st Det; IF Amp; 2nd Det, 1st Audio, AVC; Audio Output; Rectifier; Tuning Eye tube. [Data sheets 95 and 96 do not give the actual tube types, they are only designated "V1" through "V7", except for the tuning eye tube which is a type 6U5.] Sets with serial numbers 1 to approximately 325 had two additional components, C-27 and R-7, connected between contact 4 of the volume control and ground. Sets with serial numbers 1891 and higher had a modification to increase sensitivity in the tuning eye circuit.
7002	97	I don't know what this one looks like. AC model. Features 6 round pushbuttons, in a single row, for selection of:  1 - Phonograph; 2 - Radio; 3 - Silent; 4 - B.C. Band; 5 - SW 1 (11.5 to 23 MHz); 6 - SW 2 (5.8 to 12 MHz) The "Silent" button muted the audio without having to change the volume nor wait for the filaments to heat up again. All sets above serial number 240 had been modified to provide increased sensitivity of the tuning eye (target voltage changed from 255 to 97 volts). It is unclear from the data sheets whether the phono unit is integrated with the radio set, or if it was an optional external unit. The Parts list for the 7002 (on Data Sheet 103) does have part numbes for the Record Changer (25 and 60 Hz versions), the Pickup, and separate numbers for spare motors.

B4002	99	Battery operated Radio-Phono set. Requires 2 @ 45 V "B" batteries in series, and one No. 6 dry cell "A" (1.5 V) battery. (Jumpers 55, 56 removed if using a 2V "A" battery.) External antenna. Probably resembles the model 5004. Schematic shows a pickup assembly for the phono section, but nothing about a turntable motor. Perhaps it was a wind-up spring-driven turntable? 4 tubes, types: Converter - 1A7GT; IF Amp - 1N5GT; 2nd Det, 1st Audio, AVC - 1H5GT; Output Amp - 3Q5GT. A modification kit was available for "a small number of these sets sold before modification". One of the items is the 3Q5GT tube, which replaces a 1T5GT tube used for the output amp in early sets.
B4100	100	Battery operated, BC band, phono input. There is no third knob (shown on data sheet) to select radio/phono.  Requires 2 @ 45 V "B" batteries in series, and one No. 6 dry cell "A" (1.5 V) battery. It also shows a diagram for what is probably an optional external turntable, with motor, pickup. AC cord, and its own AC on/off switch.
